South Shields Secure Convincing 3-1 Victory Over Mansfield Town FC U23s at Washington Hub!

Ben Marston

South Shields made three changes to the line-up that earned a draw against second-placed Chesterfield. Nathan Shoo and Gima Suh were moved to the bench, making way for Brayden Reid and Derek Veenstra, while Brycen Miller replaced Cedre Kalenga in goal.

From the outset, South Shields dominated, pressing effectively and posing a consistent threat to Mansfield Town U23s. Joao Costa played a key role in disrupting Mansfield's attacks.

The Mariners made their intentions clear early, with Derek Veenstra capitalising on a loose ball at the edge of the opposition box. His sensational low-driven strike in the 11th minute found the back of the net, giving Shields a deserved 1-0 lead.

Mansfield, however, found a way back into the game in the 22nd minute when they were awarded a penalty for a handball. Jacob Dainty stepped up and converted to level the score at 1-1.

Shields continued to attack with intent. A brilliant lobbed pass from Samuel Marchi put Joao Costa in a great position, but Mansfield’s defence managed to block his cross into the box. Joao remained a constant threat, finding himself through on goal after a pinpoint pass from Liam Clarke, only for the linesman's flag to deny him.

Persistence paid off in the 36th minute when Joao Costa cut inside from the left wing and fired a sublime shot into the side netting, restoring Shields’ lead at 2-1.

At halftime, Tanner Johnson replaced Brycen Miller. Mansfield began the second half brightly, but their first shot of the half sailed well wide of the target.

South Shields made two substitutions in the 65th minute, with Timothy Barney and Nathan Shoo coming on for Cormac Dooley and Derek Veenstra. The Mariners nearly extended their lead in the 71st minute when Nathan Ore found himself in a promising position, but Mansfield’s keeper was there to block the effort.

Further changes came in the 72nd minute, with Gima Suh and Christian Barillas replacing Anthony Medina and Richie Buz.

In the dying moments of the game, Liam Clarke capitalized on a defensive mishap by Mansfield’s goalkeeper. He swiped the ball and calmly slotted it into the net to secure a third goal for Shields, sealing the victory as well as opening his scoring account for South Shields International Academy.

South Shields saw out the game with three goals and all three points.

The Mariners sights are now set on monday as they look to travel to Steven Gerrard Academy in the NFYL League Cup Round of 16.
